I remember walking into that Chinese buffet restaurant in downtown Vancouver, after a shift at the casino, not in the best of moods as its only been a few days sincce I broke up with a boyfriend.
Walking to the table that was reserved for the class attendees, Jack was one of the early arrivals. I made a conscious move not to sit right next to him in that circular table for 10. I did not want it to seem that I was zeroing in on the most eligible guy on that table. Did not want to look too eager to get to know him.
It turns out he was staying at an apartment not far from where mine was. And he had a car and was willing to drop me off after our Vancouver By Night events. Sometimes, he would also pick me up.
We started out as friends. As I mentioned before, I was recovering from a break-up and was not quite ready to start another relationship. His girlfriend had also just recently passed away though he was dealing with it by asking the other girls in the class for dates. He and I would go out anyway but not really on dates but more like two friends hanging out, rollerblading in Stanley Park, walking to Chinatown to have breakfast and get rice cakes.
All changed one summer night, three months after we first met.
